Mold and Bacteria Assessments

Our experience has shown there is much controversy and variance among mold professionals conducting assessments within buildings. The discrepancies can center on the type, amount, location, and interpretation of samples as well as protocol recommendations. Some basics, however, seem to have become better established and include these principles:

• A thorough visual inspection and an understanding of building and ventilation components are necessary to complete an assessment.
• Excessive mold growth within a building is undesirable and should be removed using appropriate response actions.
• The use of biocides is not a preferred substitute for the physical removal of mold.
• Testing has limitations and should be used as a tool as part of an investigation, not as a primary method of evaluation.
